Job Purpose: 

Kitchen Assistant aids in the overall function of a culinary workspace. Most of their duties are supplementary to the chef and the other roles within the work area. Assistants work with both volunteers and supervisors ensuring that all functions within the kitchen work effectively and efficiently. 

Job Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • – Demonstrated interest in food preparation and kitchen operations 
  • – Assist in food preparation and menu writing as required 
  • – Responsible for receiving shipment, recording discrepancies and storing food
  • – Knowledge of general kitchen operations and of food storage guidelines acquired through completion of NFSTP and culinary training 
  • – Comply with set standards of preparation and cooking techniques as well as set methods of serving food items acquired through completion of NFSTP and culinary training 
  • – Ensures the food preparation areas and the kitchen are clean and sanitized as per NFSTP
  • – Communicate effectively with all team members and volunteers 
  • – Ability to work in a team environment 
  • – Respond positively to the dynamics of the service environment 
  • – Being proactive during down times whilst anticipating and meeting the needs of the fast-paced environment 
  • – Ability to manage conflict, problem solve and escalate to supervisors attention when necessary 
  • – Demonstrates good judgment and decision-making skills 
  • – Effective management and leadership skills  
  • – Ability to follow directions and requirements provided by supervisors  
  • – Responsible for fostering wellness and self-care with behaviours that promote a healthy and safe work environment.

  • – Assists chef with other duties as assigned 
  • – Ability to stand for long hours and lift up to 25kg 
  • – Maintain high levels of personal hygiene 


Required Qualifications/Experience: 

  • – Valid NFSTP Certificate – National Food Safety Training Program  
  • – Culinary Arts Training (certificate or Diploma) from a recognized institution 
  • – Previous Experience working in a commercial kitchen environment 
  • – Previous Experience managing staff and/or volunteers
  • – First Aid & CPR C (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
